Watching visitors arrive and leave without buying is one of the most frustrating parts of running a Shopify store. The instinct is to change something quickly: a new theme, a bigger discount, more ads. But traffic without sales is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The cause could be the wrong visitors, a weak offer, a confusing product page, surprise shipping costs, a checkout bug or even broken tracking. Fixing the wrong one wastes time and money.
We’ve worked on 8000+ Shopify stores since 2019, and the stores that recover fastest follow the same method: break the journey into stages, find where visitors drop off, then investigate the specific cause. This guide shows you how.
The short answer: open your Shopify funnel report, compare each stage (visit, add to cart, reach checkout, complete checkout) with sensible benchmarks, and find the stage with the biggest drop. Each stage has its own typical causes, so you diagnose that stage rather than redesigning the whole store.
Before you chase a problem, confirm it’s real. Check that:
Shopify’s reports break sessions into four stages: all sessions, sessions with a product added to cart, sessions that reached checkout, and sessions that completed checkout. The rates between them tell you where to look.
| Stage rate | How it’s calculated | What a weak result usually points to |
|---|---|---|
| Added to cart rate | Sessions with cart additions ÷ all sessions | Traffic quality, offer, product page, price, trust |
| Reached checkout rate | Sessions that reached checkout ÷ all sessions | Cart friction, surprise costs, cart bugs |
| Checkout conversion rate | Sessions that completed checkout ÷ sessions that reached checkout | Checkout friction, payment, shipping, trust |
| Overall conversion rate | Sessions that completed checkout ÷ all sessions | The combined result of every stage |
What counts as “good”? There’s no single answer. Published figures for Shopify stores range from roughly 1.4% to 1.8% in some datasets, while a 2026 sample of Shopify stores reported a mean around 2.6% with a median nearer 1.7%, and Shopify itself says no universal benchmark exists. Industry, price point, traffic source and device all change the picture. Use benchmarks as a rough guide, and compare your own stages, devices and traffic sources against each other.
The stage furthest from where you’d expect it to be is usually your bottleneck.
If most sessions end before anything reaches the cart, the issue sits on your product, collection and landing pages, or in the traffic itself. Work through these checks:
For a full checklist, see our guide to product page elements that convert.
This gap often points to friction in the cart itself:
Some “add to cart” actions are just price-checking or wish-listing, so a gap at this stage isn’t always a bug. A sudden change, however, usually is.
This is the most expensive drop, because these shoppers had already decided to buy. Baymard Institute’s long-running research puts average cart abandonment at roughly 70%, and the reasons it finds are consistent:
So check these first:
Our guide to Shopify checkout optimisation goes deeper, including how to recover the carts you still lose.
Desktop usually converts better than mobile, and mobile often runs at roughly 40–60% of desktop, but a very large gap is a fixable warning sign. Look at your mobile product pages, sticky add-to-cart button, image sizes, filters, forms and keyboard types for number and email fields. Check speed too, since heavy apps and images hurt phones first.
Sometimes the store is fine and the visitors are wrong. Signs include very high bounce rates, short sessions, traffic from countries you don’t ship to, or a campaign that drives clicks but no add-to-carts. Review:
If paid social isn’t turning visitors into customers, our Facebook and Instagram marketing service covers market analysis, ad setup, targeting optimisation and campaign review. And if you want more qualified organic traffic, our advanced SEO services cover on-page and technical fixes for Shopify stores.
Numbers tell you where; behaviour tells you why. Add:
Ten minutes watching real sessions on a phone often reveals more than hours in a dashboard.
Once you’ve found suspects, don’t change everything at once. Rank each idea by likely impact, effort and confidence. Make one meaningful change at a time where you can, give it enough traffic to judge, and compare against your baseline. If your traffic is low, favour obvious fixes such as broken buttons, hidden costs and missing trust information over subtle design experiments that need large samples.

If you’ve found the problem but lack the time or skills to fix it, or the issue runs deeper than a quick tweak, an experienced team can shorten the journey. If the store itself is the barrier, our Shopify redesign service covers theme customisation, product organisation, trust factors, conversion apps, analytics setup and payment and shipping configuration. Starting fresh? We also build custom Shopify stores.
Usually because of one or more of these: the wrong visitors, a weak offer or product page, missing trust signals, surprise costs, a clunky cart or checkout, or tracking that isn’t recording sales. The funnel report helps you tell which.
It varies by industry, price and traffic source, and published averages differ, with figures from about 1.4% to above 2.5% commonly cited. A better question is whether each stage of your own funnel is improving over time.
Enough that results aren’t dominated by chance. A handful of visits can’t tell you anything. As a rule, use several weeks of data, or a few hundred sessions per page or channel, before drawing firm conclusions.
Not before you diagnose. If the issue is traffic quality, pricing or checkout friction, a new design won’t fix it. Redesign when your audit shows the theme or layout itself is the barrier.
Yes. Around 70% of carts are abandoned on average, so some abandonment is normal. The goal is to remove avoidable reasons, such as hidden costs and forced accounts, and to recover some carts with reminders.
Yes. Ads can attract clicks from people who never intended to buy, or promise something your page doesn’t deliver. Compare conversion by traffic source before blaming the store.
Fixing obvious problems such as a broken checkout step or hidden shipping costs can show results within days. Broader improvements take longer, because you need time to measure the effect.
Traffic is expensive to earn, and conversion is where it pays off. Start by reading your funnel, find the stage leaking the most shoppers, and fix that first.

A new theme feels like the obvious answer when a store isn’t performing. It looks fresh, it promises better layouts, and it’s quick to install. But a theme only changes how your store looks and is built. It won’t fix a slow app stack, weak product copy, broken redirects or a confusing checkout, and swapping themes without a plan can quietly damage the search rankings you’ve spent years earning.

A high-converting Shopify product page in 2026 needs nine core elements: clear high-quality images, a benefit-led title, an obvious price with shipping clarity, persuasive description copy, visible reviews and social proof, a prominent add-to-cart button, trust and guarantee signals, fast mobile performance, and answers to common objections. Each one removes a specific doubt or friction point, and together they turn browsers into buyers.

Cart abandonment happens when a shopper adds to cart or starts checkout but does not buy, and most of it is caused by surprise costs, forced account creation, a long or confusing process, limited payment options, or trust doubts. To cut it in 2026, show all costs early, offer guest checkout, shorten the steps, add trusted payment methods, reinforce trust at the final screen, and recover the carts you still lose with automated email and SMS. Fixing checkout recovers shoppers who had already decided to buy.
